The difference between a good bowl of oatmeal and a great bowl of oatmeal lies solely in the fixings for me, and this bowl of oatmeal is fantastic. This is the epitome of comfort in a bowl. Honestly, if I could capture the essence of fall and put it into food, this would be it.

After picking up a literal crate of organic pears, I realized I had about 30 ripe pears that needed to be used as soon as possible, so I put on my thinking cap and decided to try something new. I wanted to find a way to get that slow cooker taste in under 30 minutes, and I believe I have found the perfect trick. I pulled out my juicer and ended up juicing 2 of the large pears to make 1 cup of pear juice. The cooking directions on the steel cut oats I use (Bob’s Red Mill Gluten Free) calls for 3 cups of water, but to get that fruit infused flavor I wanted, I decided to replace one of the cups with the freshly made pear juice. How I haven’t thought to do this sooner is beyond me, but the end result was incredible. If you have a juicer, you have to give this one a try! If you don’t have a juicer, don’t fret, you can use 100% apple juice with no sweeteners added and get the same effect.
- 2 large pears juiced (you need 1 cup total), or 1 cup of 100% pure apple juice
- 2 cups of water
- 1 cup gluten free steel cut oats
- 1 apple; chopped
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
- 5 drops liquid stevia
- In a medium saucepan bring 1 cup pear or apple juice and 2 cups water to a boil.
- Add in apple chunks, steel cut oats and cinnamon. Return to a boil, stir, and simmer uncovered for 20 minutes or until oats are done, stirring periodically.
- At the end of 20 minutes, remove pan from heat, stir and cover for an additional 5 minutes.
- Add in liquid stevia and stir.
- Top with fresh pears and a sprinkle of cinnamon.
