Gluten Free Graham Crackers

Mmmm, graham crackers. They are such a kid friendly snack, but not necessarily the most health friendly option. I have yet to meet a kid that doesn’t love the sweet, cinnamon goodness that these crispy little treats have to offer, but I am sure there are a few parents out there that aren’t too fond of this cleverly disguised cookie.

If you take a look at the product on your grocery store shelves, you will find that most graham crackers on the market today are mainly composed of refined, bleached white flour and excessive amounts of refined, white sugar. Modern graham crackers are a far cry from their original, more health conscious roots, but they continue to be marketed towards little ones as a snack food, even though they would be more appropriately labeled as a dessert.

It’s no surprise why little kids love graham crackers. Kids love sugar and graham crackers are full of it, but there is a way to feel better about your little ones eating them, and it comes from making them at home. Sure, store bought brands are more convenient when you’re on the go, but making them at home gives you a chance to monitor the ingredients, and also involve your kids in the process. Letting kids help out in the kitchen encourages healthy eating habits, while also giving you a chance to talk to them about how important it is to pick healthy options. Overall, it’s just a fun and interactive way to spend time extra time with them, and I think every parent could use a little extra of that.

These gluten free graham crackers are actually pretty simple to make, and only took a little over 30 minutes total from start to finish. I used a 1.5″ cookie cutter to cut the dough into fun little shapes and this recipe made exactly 40 crackers.

  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • ***Wet Ingredients:***
  • 3 tablespoons virgin, unrefined coconut oil; melted
  • 3 tablespoons unsulphured blackstrap molasses
  • 2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 tablespoon ground flax seed
  • 1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine prepared flours and all other dry ingredients. Mix well.
  3. In a separate small mixing bowl, combine all wet ingredients and whisk together.
  4. Pour wet ingredients into dry ingredients and mix with a spoon or hand mixer until no dry spots remain.
  5. With hands, pack dough together to form a ball.
  6. On a lightly floured piece of parchment paper, roll dough ball out with a lightly floured rolling pin until it forms a rectangle that is about 1/8″ thick.
  7. Using a cookie cutter around 1.5″ in diameter, cut the dough into shapes.
  8. With a toothpick, remove dough around the shapes and set scrap dough aside, preferably onto a separate piece of parchment paper.
  9. With a fork, make 3 separate rows of holes into the cookie, then place parchment onto a cookie sheet.
  10. Cook in the oven for ten minutes, then carefully flip crackers over, cooking for an additional 7 minutes.
  11. Remove crackers from oven and place crackers onto wire racks to cool.
  12. Repeat this process with remaining dough until all dough is used up.
  13. You should have around 40 crackers total.

Hi Dina! There are so many benefits to making your own over store bought that I would definitely recommend giving them a go. Let me know what you think if you do!
